The lower piece usually has several weep holes (also called weep screeds or weeping tiles) that allow water that has entered the chimney to drain back through the stack to the roof. Both pieces are curved slightly downward at their outer edges to prevent water from running under them, and both are attached with screws driven through rubber gaskets. The upper piece is bent to fit to the roof surface above. The lower piece is bent to fit over the brick crown (the projecting masonry beneath the roof ridge). It consists of two pieces of sheet metal, one on top of the other, with an air space between them.
